2012 Summer School
Every year LISPA offers a summer program designed for students who wish to learn more about the pedagogy of the school. The Summer School is two weeks long and introduces students to the work of the Initiation and Advanced courses at LISPA. However, each week of the course forms a complete unit in itself, and can be taken separately.
Tuition Fees for entire Summer School: £550
Week 1 only: £300 - Week 2 only: £300
Week 1 - From Neutral Mask to Clown
Monday 2nd July to Friday 6th July 2012
10.00-16.00 (including a one-hour lunch break)
Course Leader: Thomas Prattki, Founder and Director of LISPA
This course offers an insight into fundamental aspects of LISPA’s pedagogy for the devising artist. Through a highly physical and playful approach to the movements in natural life and human nature, participants are invited to deepen their poetic understanding of the profound links between the world as we experience it, and our own sense of Self.
The course begins with the embodiment of wild nature using the Neutral Mask, which allows for both a deepening of one’s own unique creative potential, and access to the richness of the collective human imagination. The week will continue with a quest for a personal clown through use of the Red Nose – encouraging contact with one’s own wild nature, the child within. Both masks form the cornerstones of a pedagogy that aims to stimulate a state of open playfulness within the individual – a state understood as a necessary ingredient in both the development of original performance and Self awareness.
In addition to daily movement and improvisation classes, participants will also be invited to paint, draw and sculpt, enriching the creative process throughout the week.
The course is designed for actors, performers, dancers, directors and teachers in the performing arts who are interested in further exploration of physical creativity and playfulness as a fundamental pre-condition for the collaborative and/or individual devising process.
Week 1 is an excellent opportunity for participants considering applying for the Initiation Course at LISPA to get to know the school. For applicants from abroad, it is also a good chance to experience life in one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world.
Week 2 - Devising Theatre and Performance
Monday 9th July to Friday 13th July 2012
10.00-16.00 (including a one-hour lunch break)
Course Leader: Thomas Prattki, Founder and Director of LISPA
Week 2 offers an approach to vital principles for devising contemporary theatre and performance. Participants will explore the use of rhythm, space, dramatic build and composition in the context of several different, highly physical theatrical languages, with a view to applying their discoveries to the creation of their own work.
The group will work each day on a different dramatic territory, from Storytelling to Human Comedy to the worlds of Social Satire and the Buffons. Each territory will be explored through a series of well-constructed improvisation themes, allowing for a deeper understanding of the underlying dynamic structures within each of these theatrical languages. After the initial exploration, participants will be given the opportunity to apply the dramatic forces at play to short sequences of their own making.
The course is designed for actors, performers, dancers, directors and teachers in the performing arts interested in the process of devising original work.
Week 2 is also a suitable introduction for participants interested in applying directly to the Advanced Course at LISPA. Please note – direct applicants for the Advanced Course must have successfully completed a course similar to LISPA’s Initiation Course (i.e. based on the pedagogy of Jacques Lecoq) in another recognized school.
