Three Intensives, each comprising 3 Saturdays; 10am-6pm with a one-hour lunch break 

Intensive 1: Puppetry and Dynamic Movement led by Robin Guiver

One Intensive (3 Saturdays): £270

Two Intensives (6 Saturdays): £500

In addition we are preparing a 7-week module for our Advanced Course students, and open to those with relevant experience, led by Darren Goad and consisting of one 3-hour building session and one 2 hour movement session per week; Building sessions will be on Wednesday or Thursday mornings 10am-1pm and Movement Sessions will be on Sundays late mornings

Exploring the Fantastical World through theatrical design and construction

£370 per person - course starts 8/9 April

Over the course of 7 weeks, students will be invited to delve into the fantastical realms of scenography, costume, puppetry or installation.  They will be encouraged to explore their own aesthetics with regards to design, encouraged to use observation of the real world to inspire the creation of their own fantastical realm.
Individual technical guidance will be given to pursue their desired medium of expression. Each week will consist of one three-hour building/construction session in a workshop in groups of 5-7 students in each session and one two-hour movement/exploration session with all course participants working together. At the end of the course there will be a small presentation to an invited audience.

 

About the SpaceLab

The Spacelab is an independent department of the school with a particular focus on the dramatic construction of space, objects, portable structures, masks and costumes. It addresses directors, choreographers, writers, and scenographers interested in enhancing their knowledge of the dynamic forces which are responsible for the creation of dramatic spaces, as well as performers interested in devising their own work through use of masks, puppetry or dynamic costumes.

These Spacelab Intensives are suited for applicants with a relevant background in directing, writing, designing, performing, etc. and allow for a rich interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration between artists from very different backgrounds. The Intensives are also open to interested students in the full-time Devising Theatre and Performance Course, since it deepens the approach to the creation of original work.

All Saturday Intensives will take place in our studios at 3 Mills Studios in East London.

 

TEACHING TEAM:

Aurelian Koch - Dramatic Spatial Construction

Aurelian trained for two years at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris, where he also studied for two years at the LEM (Laboratory for the Study of Movement), a course relating movement to architecture. In 1993 he co-founded Bouge-de-là Theatre in Oxford. Aurelian has also designed for other companies, among them Foursight Theatre and Pop-up Theatre, and was the lead artist in the development of the new Pegasus Theatre building, working in collaboration with the design team to implement the public art aspect of the project. Aurelian lives with his family in Oxford, where he works as a freelance designer and design teacher.

Darren Goad - Objects

Darren received an MFA in Actor-Created Physical Theatre from Naropa University in cooperation with LISPA in 2005. He is an award-winning freelance designer and has worked for numerous theatre companies in the US and Great Britain. He has worked for six years as a designer for Mattel Toys and the New York Toy Fair. He has also taught theatre studies and technical theatre for Red Rocks College in Denver/Colorado.

Heriberto Montalban - Movement Analysis

Heriberto trained at LISPA and graduated with an MFA in Actor Created Physical Theatre from Naropa University, as well as subsequently completing the pedagogical training program at LISPA. He also holds a BA in Education and Theatre from the University of Puerto Rico. He has worked as a teacher with disadvantaged communities in his native Puerto Rico, and as a freelance performer and collaborator with Les Mondes Contraires, Infectious Theatre, Cia Huma and The Gate Theatre. Heriberto will teach some classes on Movement Analysis across all Intensives.

Robin Guiver - Puppetry

Robin trained at LISPA and has since worked as a performer/collaborator/puppeteer with several devising companies and on new work at the National Theatre Studio. He has also appeared in tv, film, and on stage in the West End. Robin has worked extensively as a Movement Director; most recently he was Movement Assistant to Toby Sedgwick for the London Olympics 2012 Opening Ceremony. He worked with Handspring Puppet Company on War Horse, and was in the original West End cast as a performer and puppeteer (2009-2011), appearing as Topthorn Heart and Joey Heart.
